Support Pier Design DetailThe vertical support posts were cut to a wedge shape after attempting to dig post holes under water. Since the holes themselves serve no useful purpose the points allowed the piers to be "self inserting". Two people would rock the pier from each side with their body weight for downward force until a firm bottom (clay) was reached and the support cross members were level. Some piers were initially cocked but it was found that a steel digging bar could be worked around the high side to fine tune the level of the piers. It remains to be seen how level they stay over the winter.
Some of the piers at the staging area. A bit of chain saw carpentry to add the points still needed.
